Travel Journal: Bilbao

Day 6: Sea

Our sixth day was spent at sea. We all had a sleep in that morning, and then enjoyed a late breakfast at the Oceanview buffet.

It was then time for a workout at the gym, followed by some smoothies from AquaSpa Café. Our favourite smoothie was called 'Recharge'. It was basically cacao, with peanut butter amongst other replenishing ingredients!

For the rest of the day, we participated in some of the onboard activities. We played trivia, went to some entertaining shows, and then enjoyed a delicious dinner at San Marco.

After a day spent at sea, we were now ready to explore Bilbao...

Day 7: Bilbao

I had never heard of the Spanish city of Bilbao prior to planning my trip. I had no idea what to expect, and I completely underestimated it. Even upon arrival, I was still unsure. Little did I know that I was in for a real treat!

We began our day by taking a shuttle bus from the ship to the city centre. This was one of the bus rides I really enjoyed, as we were able to get a feel for the city.

Stepping off the bus, the morning air was crisp and surrounding the city were mountains and greenery.

We headed towards the Frank Gehry designed Guggenheim Museum, where we spent the first of our two days in Bilbao.

The Guggenheim Museum was incredible. We saw all of the exhibitions, including Shadows by Andy Warhol, and my personal favourite, Structures of Existence: The Cells by Louise Bourgeois. I also loved Masterpieces, a permanent exhibition where we saw Jean-Michel Basquiat's Man from Naples...

After nearly five hours spent in awe at the Guggenheim Museum, we decided it was time for a traditional Spanish lunch... Paella anyone?

Lunch was beautiful, but the paella had us all ready for an afternoon siesta... Instead of napping, us girls decided it was time for some pampering. I desperately needed my nails done, so we found a local salon.

It was soon time to return to the ship for the night. We had enjoyed a big day ashore, and were now ready to rest and relax!

Day 8: Bilbao

We spent our second day touring the rest of Bilbao. We walked around the pretty streets, and even had a look inside some of the shops. We then decided to do a Hop-On Hop-Off tour of the city, where we were able to cover more ground than we would walking.

The Hop-On Hop-Off tour made us realise that Bilbao was a lot bigger than we thought. We got to see the marketplace, the beautiful gardens, and the famous Plaza Ensanche.

We ended our day back in the city centre, where we enjoyed "Pintxo", small Spanish snacks typically eaten in bars.

We then returned to the ship for an early departure. Next stop: La Coruña.
